Child left home with Rottweiler now in the care of relatives
Child left home with Rottweiler now in the care of relatives, An East Hartford toddler being cared for by relatives while his parents were at a local hospital giving birth drowned in his family's pool Wednesday night.

The heartbreaking incident was reported at a home on Pendleton Drive around 7:45 p.m. when the unidentified 1-year-old child was found above the pool cover of his family's backyard pool.

"The grandfather came out and was just screaming his head off," said neighbor Joe St. John.

Neighbors said family members tried to perform CPR on the child.

"They worked at it quite a while," St. John said. "It just didn't have good results."

Neighbors said the child was being cared for by his grandparents while his parents were at Middlesex Hospital giving birth to another child.

"They seemed very happy," neighbor Dawn Mawaka said. "They were a young couple. I can only imagine what they're feeling right now."

Unidentified sources said the cover on top of the pool made it difficult to reach the child to pull him from the water.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
