Dr. David Ho, a leading AIDS researcher who developed the use of protease inhibitors to treat patients with HIV, gave some sobering statistics about what he called “the worst plague in human history.”
Johnson announced his foundation has raised $10 million towards AIDS/HIV research and charities, tested 250,000 people, granted 150 minority scholarships, and opened 18 technology centers and six clinics.
He spoke about his experience telling his wife Cookie he was HIV positive, and her reaction. She said, “We’re going to be in this together.”
He thanked Lakers owner Jerry Buss for being like a father and supporting him. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa spoke, and former teammates James Worthy, Michael Cooper, A.C. Green, and Mychal Thompson were among those in attendance.
