Last Titanic Witness Turns 100

Last Titanic Witness Turns 100, Angus MacDonald was one month old when the Titanic left Belfast en route to Southampton, and he and his mother were on the docks when she departed. MacDonald returned to that harbor to celebrate his 100th birthday, as he is believed to be the last living person to have seen the ship in person.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, MacDonald, a retired Master Mariner, spent his life “[dodging] U-Boats, through the Suez Canal and the Indochina wars of the Far East where he dabbled in espionage” (though the paper doesn’t explain how one picks up espionage as a part-time hobby).

“It’s a lonely life at sea,” he said. “But it’s been a good life and I lived it quietly and enjoyed it.”
