Russell Brand Won't Take $20 Million

Russell Brand Won't Take $20 Million, Russell Brand won’t take the 50 percent of Katy Perry’s fortune he’s entitled to in their divorce, TMZ is reporting. The actor and comedian is legally eligible to approximately $20 million of his estranged wife’s money, as they didn’t sign a pre-nup. As a result, everything they earned during their 14-month marriage is community property, and each is entitled to 50 percent of the earnings.

Brand’s lawyer filed the final divorce papers on February 7, 2012, after he initially filed papers on December 30, much to Perry’s surprise. The judge won’t make the divorce official until June 30, as there’s a six-month waiting period. The two married in October 2010 on a tiger sanctuary in a traditional Hindu wedding.

According to Forbes, the ‘One That Got Away’ singer made $44 million between May 2010 and May 2011. While Brand would have been entitled to half Perry’s income amount if he exercised his community property rights, he has said he wants to keep things friendly. He’s happy to end the relationship with the money he earned on his own, saying “I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.” His decision comes after reports of marital problems plagued the couple for months before they announced their divorce.
