Brian Sleboda and Lori Gardner

Brian Sleboda and Lori Gardner
Brian Sleboda and Lori Gardner, Lori Gardner, 26, and Brian Sleboda, 31, turned themselves in to authorities Tuesday afternoon, October 4,2011. The couple disappeared after Gardner’s son was rescued from a filthy basement—-where he had been kept in a coffin.
A neighbor heard the child crying, and when police arrived, found a 7 year old diaper-clad boy in a dark, filthy basement.

Once in awhile, a neighbor will do the right thing. This happened when one of many of Lori Gardner and Brian Sleboda’s neighbors heard the cries of Lori’s son last week, and notified police.
When police arrived, Slaboda and Gardner managed to vanish—-while officer’s were searching the basement.

“At least someone had enough guts and common sense and enough guts to say something about it instead of letting it go on,” said Mark Hoffner.

Hoffner lives across the street. He didn’t hear the child’s plea for help and said he never suspected what police said happened there.

Police found the child, wearing only a diaper in the dark and beyond filthy basement. In fact, the house had to be condemned. The only light in the dungeon basement came from an old cigarette sign. A broken down toilet was covered with flies, ticks and other nasty creatures.

The precious little boy looked at the officers and and asked ” Are you here to help me?” He then went on to explain he hadn’t eaten in awhile.

He stated he was duct taped to chairs and put in the coffin to be punished, and that there were ghosts down there. He also said he knew Mom and boyfriend would drag chains across the room to scare him, and that Brian frequently duct taped the coffin shut.

This time, he was able to open the coffin lid.

Investigators filed endangerment and unlawful restraint charges against the boy’s mother, 26-year-old Lori Gardner, and his stepfather, 31-year-old Brian Sleboda.

Ms. Gardner, 26, and Mr. Sleboda, 31, were arraigned Tuesday night before Magisterial District Judge Robert G. Russell on felony counts of endangering the welfare of a child and unlawful restraint. They were committed to Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $60,000 straight bail each.

Some reports indicate the couple is married and that Brian Sleboda is the boy’s stepfather—-not that it makes a difference. Other reports say Brian was just another of Lori Gardner’s boyfriends. That doesn’t matter either.

What matters is how in the world do people like this manage to have children in their custody?
There is something so wrong with our system that allows parents to abuse, misuse, torment, and torture children, then give them a bit of jail time and a parenting class and return the child(ren) to them again.

These two, Lori Gardner and Brian Sleboda, allegedly punished this 7 year old boy by confining him with duct tape in a filthy, slovenly home, locked him in a coffin in a dark and dingy basement, terrified him, starved him—–all as a form of punishment. What the hell happened to a time out, or the removal of a favorite toy for a day, or even a swat on the behind with the open palm of a hand?

It won’t happen in my lifetime, but if this generation doesn’t do something, I know in my heart there will be a time when a parental license will be required. Right now, I think that would be a good thing, but it is so wrong to have to go that route! Anyone have a viable solution to child abuse?

What say you? I personally think Lori Gardner needs to lose custody and both Lori and Brian Sleboda should never be allowed around minors again. Ever. They are both adult bullies, and will never change.
Please leave your thoughts and theories in the comment section beneath the video—-it’s quite interesting.
