Harlem basketball girl shot. A promising young female basketball star was shot to death in Harlem early Sunday morning.Emotions spilled onto the streets as relatives and friends of Tayshana Murphy watched her lifeless body being hauled away. The 18-year-old, considered one of the city's top basketball stars, was gunned down inside Harlem's Grant Houses early Sunday morning.
Friends say she was chased into the building, but didn't make it to her 15th floor apartment in time.
She was fatally shot in the head in a fourth floor hallway.
"This is a young girl who lost her life that had a great basketball career going on," said Tanya Saunders, the victim's friend.
It's career her coach at Murry Bergtraum High School says was just beginning.
Murphy sat out with an ACL injury during her junior year, but he says she would have been a star point guard this season.
"Virginia Commonwealth, Miami, a whole slew of colleges looking at her. She had everything in front of her everything to live for," said Ed Grezinsky, the victim's basketball coach.
Police are still investigating, but friends say the shooting may have stemmed from a rivalry in the neighborhood.
"There has been a problem going on with the projects with Grants Manhattannville and now Lincoln Projects too. It needs to stop," said a friend.
Grieving friends say Murphy, who was known on the courts as chicken, lived for basketball.
Her murder is leaving behind unanswered questions and many wondering what could have been.
"She would have made it far, made it very far," her friend said.
