Elderly Man Forgot He Was Wearing Gun Ankle Detroit Airport Automated Target Recognition System, Millions of Americans (91.9 Million Americans Will Travel) are expected to travel during the holidays, many of them via the nation’s airports. But when you’re waiting on weather-delayed flights, standing in those long security checkpoint lines or dealing with grumpy fellow passengers, just be thankful you’re not having a day like this folk had.

Dec. 10, 2011 A 76-year-old man told police he forgot he was wearing a gun on ankle on Detroit Airport when he tried to go through a security checkpoint. The gun was spotted by the Transportation Security Administration's high-tech and controversial advanced imaging scanners using an automated target recognition system, the TSA said in a statement. The automated target recognition system, installed on the imaging systems in the U.S. starting this summer, is designed to identify threats on the human body and signal screeners to their location on an outline of the human body.

The man was arrested and later released after Conway said a background check came back clean.
