Little did he realise was that he was recognized by a viewer and arrested by police after a month-long investigation.

It was discovered that he had changed his name from Wu Gang to Hao was reported by a viewer who thought he looked a lot like the suspect linked to the 1998 murder of a 24-year-old man in China’s Jilin Province.

X Li Ang, a police officer in Jilin, told Xinhua that although Wu’s appearance has changed since the murder, his “soft features” gave him away.

After a month-long investigation where police confirmed that Hao was in fact Wu, he was arrested in Shenyang, the capital city of the northern Heilongjiang Province, where the show is filmed.

Wu confessed as soon as he was arrested, saying that he never thought he would be caught in public.

“I have been accustomed to using my false identity of ‘Liu Hao’,” Wu said.

“Wu did not take China’s laws seriously if he believed that his televised debut wouldn’t matter,” said Zhao Shilin, the chief of the Jilin police’s inspection and disciplinary squad.

Wu had a 7-year-old son at the time of the crime but completely severed contact with his family, causing the child to believe his father was dead, Chinese police department stated.

“I wanted to have a spouse and be more famous by appearing on TV to live a completely new life. Had I not impulsively murdered the person, I could have been a popular celebrity,” regretted Wu, when investigated.
