2,000 Netflix movies to disappear
A whopping 1,794 movies and TV shows will start disappearing from the Netflix catalogue May 1 in what the Atlantic Wire is calling the "Great Netflix Instant Vanishing of 2013," including movies like "Cruel Intentions," "Big Daddy," and "Dr. No." Netflix spokesperson Joris Evers said Netflix sometimes chooses not to renew the licenses of less watched movies.
Though in the grand scheme of Netflix's 60,000 titles 2,000 doesn’t seem like a lot, one of users' main complaints already is the lack of interesting movies and TV shows, so this is sure to have an effect.
Netflix said it will be adding titles to make up for the deficit.
"Netflix is a dynamic service, we constantly update the TV shows and movies that are available to our members," Netflix said in a statement. "We will add more than 500 titles May 1, but we also have titles expiring, this ebb and flow happens all the time.
"The vast majority of the titles that expire on Wednesday are older features that were aggregated by Epix. We recently added many great, more recent titles such as 'ParaNorman' (Universal), 'Hunger Games' (Epix), 'Safe' (Epix), and 'Bachelorette' (Weinstein). Tomorrow we will also add 'MI:2,' among many other titles."
Slate dubbed the disappearing titles "Streamageddon" and lamented the loss of classics like "Goldfinger," "Billion Dollar Brain," "Beach Red," and "Stardust Memories."
