Derek Fisher waived
Derek Fisher waived, Derek Fisher was waived by the Dallas Mavericks after the veteran guard asked for a release from the team, saying it was too difficult to spent time away from his family in Los Angeles. The move came four days after the 38-year-old Fisher suffered an injury in a game against the Philadelphia 76ers, The Associated Press noted. The injury was expected to take about two weeks to heal, and Fisher said he wanted to be back home during that time.
”I have made decisions in the past, leaving money and opportunity on the table, and I will need to do that again,” Derek Fisher said in a statement after Dallas announced he was waived. ”My family is my priority and that is where I choose to be.”
The Mavericks had signed Fisher to help shore up a lack of depth and spotty play from guards, which was especially worse when the squad was hampered by injuries. In the nine games before Derek Fisher was waived, the guard averaged 8.6 points and 3.6 assists, having jumped into the season just one day after his first practice with Dallas, the Los Angeles Times noted.
The move could signal the end of a long and productive career for Fisher. The guard was a pivotal part of five NBA championship teams with the Los Angeles Lakers.
After Derek Fisher was waived, the Mavericks again have a question mark at the point guard spot. The team had went after Deron Williams in the offseason, but he opted to stay with the Brooklyn Nets. Jason Kidd said he wanted to rejoin Dallas, but ended up signing with the New York Knicks instead.
