Fans hoping for a remake or sequel to the 1986 classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off were disappointed after Honda released a Super Bowl video (below) promoting the Honda CR-V instead.
A present-day Matthew Broderick calls in sick to his movie shoot, and takes the CR-V out for a day of hijinks instead. (Broderick hasn’t been especially busy since his late 80′s hit, but he’s managed to stay consistently employed, showing up in last year’s Tower Heist and playing “Mr. Buellerton” (get it?) in New Year’s Eve).
“Life is packed with things you have to do. But sometimes you have to live a little,” Broderick says, a modern twist on Bueller’s mantra: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
Naturally, the ad makes several references to the movie – like the way Broderick arranges his towel on his head, plus a scene where he pulls up next to his boss in traffic (and then hides behind a giant panda). At the end, what appears to be the same actor who played the parking attendant in the movie takes the CR-V on its own wild ride. And there’s even the post-credits admonition to “go on, get going, go.”
For Bueller fans, the ad is more a trip down memory lane than anything else, and Honda is obviously hoping that the nostalgia will sell more of its mommy SUVs.
However, some classic Ferris quotes inexplicably failed to make it into the commercial. Some examples:
“It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.”
“If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away?”
Plus one that probably shouldn’t be included in a car commercial: “You killed the car.”
