Annette Swoffer found the cute critter "hanging out with her cats in her kitchen." Soon, it found its way past Swoffer's pets and curled up on the couch.
"I got a shock. It's kind of like finding an elephant in your house," she said.
After a friend came over to confirm that Swoffer wasn't hallucinating and that she was, in fact, staring at a seal in her living room, Swoffer called the SPCA.
"They were giggling away and I'm saying, 'I'm not drunk, I'm not lying, there's a seal in my house,'" Swoffer told the NZ Herald News.
Soon the Department of Conservation sent over their biodiversity programme manager, Chris Clark, who removed the seal and returned it to the sea.
Clark and his colleagues were already looking for a seal after a reported sighting earlier in the day
