Channing Askew pacemaker, AN autopsy was scheduled today for a 47-year-old Chicago man who died after apparently attempting to remove his pacemaker from his chest, officials said.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Channing Askew, who lived in a group home in Chicago's Uptown neighbourhood, complained of chest pains yesterday and asked a worker at the home to call an ambulance.

Police said Mr Askew returned to his room until paramedics arrived, then fell unconscious while in an ambulance to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital. When paramedics attempted to revive him, they found a puncture wound on his upper left chest.

Initially believing that Mr Askew had been stabbed, the paramedics contacted police.

At the hospital, a doctor told police that Mr Askew had apparently tried to remove his pacemaker. It was not immediately known what he used in the attempt.

He was pronounced dead at 11.33pm local time at the hospital, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

A representative for the group home where Mr Askew lived could not comment on any mental health issues he may have had.
