Baby stroller in back of truck
Baby stroller in back of truck, A 23-year-old Daytona Beach woman faces a charge of child neglect after she rode in the bed of a pickup truck with an 8-month-old child beside her in a stroller.

Keyona Nicole Davis was baby-sitting the boy at the time, police said Thursday.

While Davis was arrested, the driver of the truck, Bennie White, was cited for careless driving, Daytona Beach police spokesman Jimmie Flynt said.

According to the arrest report:

Police received numerous 911 calls Wednesday about the situation as the 1994 Dodge Ram traveled along Mason Avenue, Nova Road and Orange Avenue and finally pulled into the driveway of a home on South Adams Street.

The baby's mother was called to come pick up the child.

One 911 caller reported the truck as it traveled on Mason Avenue and turned onto Nova Road, while another caller was on the line for almost five minutes, following the truck as it went south on Nova and staying behind it until police caught up with it on Adams.

It was about three minutes into the call when she told the dispatcher that a woman was in the bed of the truck with the stroller.

The arresting officer, Frank Geremia, noted in the arrest affidavit that the truck traveled on two of the busiest roadways and through two of the busiest intersections in Volusia County, something that could easily have resulted in "serious injury or death of a child."

In his report, Geremia called it "a highly dangerous situation," and said it was "incredibly unsafe."

John Harrell, a spokesman for the state Department of Children and Families, says his agency agrees with that assessment and will be conducting "a thorough investigation" of the incident.

"We are disturbed by what happened," Harrell said. "We believe this is a situation that could put a child at risk."
