In what is thought to be a first for the social media site, SpongeBob's The Ice Race Cometh: A Twitter-Tale will run from today until July 15 only on Twitter.
The story, created by the SpongeBob SquarePants writing team, will be told via multiple tweets and images posted throughout each day.
The tale focuses on SpongeBob and his friends as they prepare for The Bikini Bottom Great Sleigh Race. It will also be available via a custom tab on the SpongeBob Facebook page.
The Ice Race Cometh acts as a prequel to Frozen Face Off, the brand-new primetime SpongeBob television episode premiering in the US on July 15.
This is not Spongebob's first foray into social media, as in January Nickelodeon premiered an original animated programme featuring the character on Facebook. The broadcaster currently has around 84 million fans across all of its Facebook pages, including 25m for Spongebob.
"SpongeBob's fanbase is so broad that about a third of its audience is adults, so we wanted to extend the show's magic to new places like Twitter so those fans can experience it," said Roland Poindexter, senior vice president of animation at Nickelodeon.
