Chilean miners suing for negligence
Chilean miners suing for negligence. The Chile miners have filed a lawsuit against their government for negligence. Last year, the men were trapped underground for 69 days. Thirty-one out of the 33 men are suing Chile for over half a million each.
The Chile miners who are suing said that they did not file the suit because of the money. They want to make sure that this type of horrible mining accident never happens again, and that is a wonderful reason for filing. Sometimes the only way to make things change is by hitting those in charge where it hurts, which usually involves money.
Miner Omar Reygadas said, "This lawsuit is only to set a precedent so this won't happen again. It's so that conditions improve." Even though they went through a major ordeal and had the full attention of the world on them, the miners did not end up rich. They did get several things after they were rescued, though. Ultimately, each rescued Chilean miner received about $17,000 each. Some of them have also been paid for appearances, but they still are not well off, which is too bad. After all that and all the attention of the world, you would think they would have come out of this ordeal better off.
