+Charlie Sheen Dead?
+Charlie Sheen Dead?Charlie Sheen's death may have been the number one internet search this morning, but your beloved leader hasn't left the building (or the Valley). Though this wouldn't have been the craziest rumor we've ever heard (hello, have you witnessed Charlie's bizarre behavior over the last few months?! oh wait, none of that's actually a rumor), he's actually just another celebrity to be part of a death hoax. But unlike the cruel ones that have made victims out of stars like Justin Bieber, this one wasn't just an internet rumor gone wild - Charlie's social media scam was well thought out by some scheming hackers.
According to Mashable, several headlines beginning with "RIP!" or "Breaking News" were spread around Facebook (and a few on Twitter), all with text about Charlie Sheen dying in his home or due to cardiac arrest. If you clicked on the link, you were taken to a fake YouTube-clone page. Clicking on any part of the screen spread would have caused you to immediately spread spam on your Facebook profile. There was also a survey at the end that spread even more viruses and a some computers were infected with malware after visiting the fake video site.
Sound familiar? A very similar spam link was sent around after Osama bin Laden's death. Oh, those silly MF-ing, evil hackers.
Charlie has yet to address the rumors directly, but he did add a message to the end of a tweet (which eerily was a retweet about an officer who had just been killed in the line of duty): "Warlock: long nap...very much alive."
So good news, Charlie fans - he's alive and well. Your computer? Maybe not so much.
