1. Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey is a stand-up comedian as well a Canadian-American actor. He began his stand-up comedian career in 1979 with Leatrice Spevack as his manager. He started in Toronto at Yuk Yuk’s, a Canadian comedy club chain established by Mark Breslin, a former stand-up comedian. Jim Carrey moved to Los Angeles where he began working at The Comedy Store. Soon afterward, he was noticed by a well-known comedian who signed Jim Carrey to open tour performances. He later landed a lead role on television as Skip Tarkenton on a show called The Duck Factory and went on to work in several films.

2. Bill Cosby
Bill Cosby is a veteran stand-up comedian as well as an author, musician, actor, and producer. He landed a role in a television series, but continued performing as a stand-up comedian during the run of the series. He recorded several musical albums, but stand-up comedy remained his main recording interest. During one of his performances in Washington D.C., Bill Cosby met a woman named Camille Hanks, who later became his wife.

3. Jerry Seinfeld
Jerry Seinfeld was born on April 29, 1954 and grew up to be an actor, writer, and comedian. He played a comical version of himself in a show called Seinfeld while still doing stand-up comedy performances. His interest in stand-up comedy began after brief periods in college productions. When the well-known sitcom, Seinfeld, came to an end, Jerry returned his attention primarily to stand-up comedy, rather than engaging himself in a film career.

4. Robin Williams
Since the 1970’s, Robin Williams has done a great number of tours regarding stand-up comedy. One of these tours broke some comedy show records, which had previously been held for a very long period of time. During some of these events, tickets would completely sell out within the first half hour after becoming available to the public.

5. Drew Carey
Drew Carey is a comedian, photographer, actor, and game show host who served in the United States Marines and then made a name for himself as a stand-up comedian. In 1985, David Lawrence suggested to Drew Carey that he go to a library and read books about joke writing. This was essentially the beginning of his career as a comedian. He won an open-mike contest and then became MC, Master of Ceremonies, at the Cleveland Comedy Club. In the 1990’s he wrote his own stand-up comedy special, which later aired on television and won Drew Carey an award for best writing.
