Floyd Mayweather sets next fight
Floyd Mayweather sets next fight. Sometimes failed plans end up giving you some of the best fights. It was clear that Floyd Mayweather was in attendance for the Andre Berto-Victor Ortiz fight two months ago to set up his next bout.

However, there is no doubt in my mind that a fight with Berto was all but signed had Berto come out victorious. Obviously, it was Ortiz who won in the most impressive and determined performance of his young career.

You could argue it’s too soon for Ortiz to cash out like this. Eh, I like it. Mayweather announced on his Twitter account that it’s a done deal for Sept. 17. Ortiz is just young enough, just brash enough to believe he can go in there and beat Mayweather.

Belief can go a long way. He’s an aggressive southpaw who has fought hard to rebuild his image and reputation following him basically saying ‘no mas’ against Marcos Maidana a few fights back.

As for Mayweather, well, it’s a bout against a young champion for his old WBC belt. It will be interesting to see if Mayweather can take Ortiz’ shot. It will be even more interesting to see if Ortiz can land a flush shot on Mayweather’s chin.

As is, hey, it’s not that bad of a fight. You see why Mayweather took the bout. You see why Ortiz accepted the terms. And we’re only three months away.

- After watching Fight Camp 360 last weekend, truly tough to view. Really want Sugar Shane Mosley to call it a day. Maybe I’m overly emotional for him, and I know hanging around too long is kind of a rite of passage with fighters, but it pains me to see Mosley now. He wanted to quit, but trainer Naazim Richardson wouldn’t let him. After the fight Richardson said something to the effect that Mosley wouldn’t have wanted to go out like that. It’s just sad seeing Mosley and Roy Jones still out there.

- And boxing lost another great champion far too young as former champion Genaro Hernandez died Tuesday afternoon in Los Angeles. My best real memory of Hernandez is actually the coming out party for Mayweather in 1998. It wasn’t until after Hernandez’ career was over that I realized just how great he was. And from all reports, he was an even better person. RIP Chicanito.
