Mom turned in rioter son
Mom turned in rioter son, An 18-year-old girl picked to be an "Olympic ambassador" during the London Games next ye-ar has been turned over to police by her distraught mother who saw her on television ri-g-ht in the middle of the looting. As a consequence, Chelsea Ives, previously held up as a role model, has appeared at Westminster magistrates' court, where she pleaded not guilty to two counts of burglary, violent disorder and attacking a police car.
"It was absolutely sickening," said Chelsea's mother Adrienne Ives, who was at home in Leytonstone, north London, watching horrifying scenes of anarchy unfold in Enfield, barely six miles away.
Adrienne, 47, who was with her husband, Roger, 54, said: "I could not believe it. For a minute we did not know what to do."
Chelsea, a talented athlete, is an ambassador picked to welcome visitors to the Olympics next year. She has posed with such dignitaries as the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, and Lord Coe, the head of the UK Olympic bid.
Her mother explained her dilemma: "What could normal parents do? How can you sit there and say, 'That's ok?' We were watching people lose their homes and businesses. As parents, we had to say, 'She can't get away with that.' I will be portrayed as a bitch ' but what are you supposed to do?"
There have been a number of similar cases where parents have had to struggle with their consciences.
For example, a 15-year-old boy, one of over 200 people arrested across Manchester, Salford and Liverpool, is now under arrest on suspicion of burglary ' because of his mother.
She saw pictures of rioters trying to prise open the shutters of a shop in Salford as the shopping precinct was being looted on Tuesday evening. She recognised her son and marched him to the local police station.
Garry Shewan, assistant chief constable of Greater Manchester police, confirmed: "The parent saw the picture of her son and was absolutely appalled, horrified and angry. What she did is extremely admirable and I thank her for handing him in to local officers as it must have been a hard thing to do."
