John Lennon's tooth for sale, It's one of the weirder souvenirs anyone could hope to own, but one of John Lennon's teeth is up for auction.
No, it really is. It is about two centimetres tall, slightly brown thanks to a youth spent under the British health care system and with a cavity that would have any dentist wondering where they were going to spend their next holiday after charging a fortune to fix it.
The molar is expected to sell for up to $NZ19,000.
And just how did this exotic piece of Beatles memorabilia come to be on the market? It was given by Lennon to his former housekeeper Dot Jarlett.
''He was in the kitchen and he had this tooth which he had wrapped in a piece of paper,'' Dot's son Barry said. John Lennon's tooth auction, the beatles, John Lennon's tooth auction $16,000, John Lennon molar, John Lennon,
''He said: 'Dot will you dispose of this' and then he said: 'Or, as your daughter's a Beatles fan, you can give it to her as a souvenir'.''
Dot did just that, but now the family has decided they can live without it. It comes with an affidavit signed by Mrs Jarlett who has previously sold items. ''He was very generous to my mother,'' Mr Jarlett said.
''He treated her like family, because he didn't really have a very big family and he really looked after my mum. He used to call her Aunty Dot.'' In a masterpiece of understatement, a spokesperson from the auction house handling the sale said:
''This is the most wonderful and weird item that we have ever had for sale.''
Of course the next question is what to do with it. The mind boggles.
